Leaving Lanzarote on January 3rd 2024, Rod Adlington, farmer, Guy Minshull, award-winning soldier, Alex Perry, and vet, Anna Williams competed in the Atlantic Dash, a 3200 mile
Race for ocean rowing teams from the Canaries to Antigua. It is considered to be one of the World’s toughest endurance challenges.
The team were raising money for Meningitis Now and Get A Head, two small charities that are vibrant in their approach to their causes and make a real difference.
Rod lost his son Barney to Meningitis in 2005, and the idea of the row was formulated to celebrate what would have been Barney’s 21st birthday.
The team had an eventful but ultimately successful time, battling 60 foot waves, force ten storms and lots of tricky head currents. They completed the event as winners
And in 52 days 18 hours. This beats the previous course record by 16 days. More importantly, with the amazing generosity of everyone involved, family and friends, the teams raised just over £150,000 pounds, split equally between the two charities. Thank you must go to our headline sponsors, Bromwich Hardy, Lodders solicitors, Lifeline fire and safety systems, EHB estate agents, and Usk Vale Turkeys.
They saw incredible wildlife, whales, dolphins, marlin, sharks, seabirds, storm petrel and the tropic bird. Lots of very big ships too, that always seemed to be aiming straight at them, but any collision was luckily avoided!
The team at Adlington looked after the ‘ship’ incredibly during Rod’s absence, and a huge round of applause must go to them for their efforts.
Watch this space for their next challenge!
